Getting Active Again After an Achilles Tendon Injury

Common causes of Achilles tendon injuries

The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon you have. It connects the back of your foot to your heel bone and to the lower leg muscles in your calf. It’s what allows you to flex and rotate your feet and ankles, so it’s a pretty important tendon. Most people injure their Achilles tendon from overuse in sports, wearing shoes that don’t fit right, bone spurs, and simply getting older. Other causes include having a certain foot shape or flat feet.

How to become active post-injury

You’ll want to have clearance from Dr. Bregman before attempting to put any weight on your foot, or resuming any of your usual activities. But, generally speaking, if you end up having surgery to fix the tendon, your recovery process may look like this:

2 weeks post-surgery

You’ll have your splint and stitches removed and replaced with a boot. You may also begin a physical rehabilitation process, and you’ll usually require crutches when walking. 

4 weeks post-surgery

The boot may be removed, and a physical therapist will show you how to safely move your ankle, along with giving you exercises to build up your leg muscles.

6-8 weeks post-surgery

You should be able to stand on your affected foot for short periods of time and ease into some light activities such as swimming or short bike rides.

4-6 months post-surgery

If all goes well, you should be able to resume your usual activities, albeit with caution. You won’t be considered fully healed until at least a full year after the surgery.

Getting active after recovery without surgery

Even without surgery, you may need to wear a special device on your injured foot or inserted into your shoes. Dr. Bregman and a physical therapist will show you some exercises and positions that keep your heel raised, reducing stress on the tendon. You may also need special products to protect your ankle when you resume wearing your normal shoes. The use of amniotic tissue/fluid or exosome therapy can also significantly enhance the healing process of an Achilles tendon injury allowing you to get back to your regular activities faster.
